A cyclist riding along a mountain road with views of the sea in Mallorca

Mallorca is the perfect destination for cycling all year round. Its roads wind their way along the coast, through the interior and up into the Serra de Tramuntana, with routes to suit all abilities.

If you’re staying at the Aparthotel Duva & Spa, you can make the most of your stay by exploring some of Mallorca’s prettiest villages on two wheels, such as Pollensa, Sóller, Valldemossa, Deià, Fornalutx and Artà.

The perfect starting point: Pollensa

When it comes to cycling in the north of Mallorca, Pollensa is an unmissable stop. Its location makes it easy to link up different routes and combine a visit to the town with some of the best-known roads in the area.

From Puerto Pollensa, you can opt for a relatively short ride or extend your route towards Formentor, Lluc or the Serra de Tramuntana.

A must-see route: Formentor

One of the best-known routes in the area is the one linking Puerto Pollensa with Cap de Formentor. The official route published by Pollensa Town Council covers a distance of 40.5 kilometres (there and back), with an estimated duration of around 4 hours and a high level of difficulty. The route passes through Platja de Formentor before reaching Cap de Formentor and returning to the harbour.

It is approximately 3 kilometres from Port de Pollensa to the start of the climb up to Formentor. From there begins one of the most recognisable stretches of the Mallorcan cycling route, with the Es Colomer viewpoint as one of the route’s landmarks.

Along the route itself, you can make several stops:

  • Es Colomer viewpoint, to enjoy the views.
  • Platja de Formentor, a good spot for a break.
  • Cap de Formentor, the route’s end point.
  • Formentor Lighthouse, one of the main highlights of the ride.
  • Port de Pollensa, where you can finish the route and recharge your batteries.

Furthermore, this route is one of the closest and most versatile options, covering around 40 km and suitable for a morning ride.

If you want to cover more kilometres: Lluc

For those who want to carry on cycling, Pollensa also offers a route to the Monastery of Lluc. The suggested route to Lluc is around 53.8 km long and follows mountain roads, passing through the Coll de sa Batalla.

It is a perfect alternative for those who want to add some mountain cycling to their day without having to tackle an extreme route just yet.

Mountains, bends and scenery: Sóller

Sóller is one of the great cycling classics in Mallorca. Situated in the heart of the Serra de Tramuntana, reaching the village means venturing into one of the island’s most spectacular mountain landscapes.

One of the main attractions for cyclists is the Coll de Sóller, a climb that links the Sóller area with Bunyola.

The pass, measured from Sóller, is approximately 8.5 km long, climbs 463 metres in elevation and has an average gradient of 5.5 per cent. It also features 25 hairpin bends, making it one of the island’s most recognisable climbs.

For a longer route, Sóller can be combined with other parts of the Tramuntana range. One of the cycling routes in the area is 123 km long and has an elevation gain of around 1,962 metres, also passing through Valldemossa and Bunyola.

Recommended stops

A walk around Sóller offers the chance to stop off at various places:

  • Sóller, to relax and have a drink.
  • Port de Sóller, about 2 km from the village.
  • Coll de Sóller, if you’re looking to include a mountain pass.
  • Valldemossa, if you want to extend the route through the Serra de Tramuntana.
  • Deià, as another possible stop on a longer route.

For cyclists who enjoy mountain routes, Sóller is particularly appealing as it allows you to turn a half-day visit into a full day out on your bike.

A stop amongst the mountains: Valldemossa

Valldemossa is another of the villages that fits perfectly into a cycling route through the Tramuntana mountains.

Rather than thinking of Valldemossa as a destination in its own right, it’s worth including it as one of the stops on a route along Mallorca’s mountain roads.

One option is to combine it with a visit to Sóller and Deià, following sections of the Ma-10, one of the best-known roads in the Serra de Tramuntana.

For those who want to add a little challenge to their walk, from Valldemossa you can carry on towards the Hermitage of the Holy Trinity. The climb itself is 2.3 km long, with an elevation gain of 101 metres and an average gradient of 4.5 per cent, although the steepest section reaches a gradient of 9.6 per cent.

It’s a good option for adding a bit of elevation gain without necessarily turning the outing into an extreme day’s hike.

A good stop on a half-day hike

Valldemossa is particularly well suited if you’re looking for a short day out. You can cycle there, stop for a coffee or a bite to eat, and then carry on to other parts of the Tramuntana range.

If you want to extend the route, you can link it up with Deià and Sóller to turn the trip into a much more comprehensive route.

A stop with views of the Mediterranean: Deià

Between Sóller and Valldemossa lies Deià, another place well worth including on a route through the Serra de Tramuntana.

In this case, the main attraction is the journey itself. The roads in this area combine mountain and coastal scenery, with views of the Mediterranean and various spots where it’s well worth stopping for a few minutes.

Deià can serve as a stop-off point on a longer route along the MA-10, particularly if you want to visit several villages during the same trip.

For cyclists looking for a full day’s ride, an interesting option is to cycle from Valldemossa → Deià → Sóller, enjoying a variety of landscapes without the village being the sole focus of the route.

The Serra de Tramuntana trail network itself features several ascents and descents around Deià, including the Can Costa section, which is around 6.6 km long and has an elevation gain of almost 300 metres.

The reward after the climb: Fornalutx

Fornalutx is a particularly appealing option for cyclists who enjoy mountain roads.

Situated in the Sóller area, it can be incorporated into routes through the Serra de Tramuntana and combined with other destinations in the area.

The journey to Fornalutx offers a route with plenty of elevation gain, whilst also providing a well-deserved reward at the end of the ride: the chance to stop, rest and quietly enjoy the surroundings before setting off again.

For a more challenging day out, you can combine Pollensa, Sóller and Fornalutx in a single day. In fact, there are routes starting from Puerto Pollensa that link up these towns and cover around 97 km, with over 1,300 metres of elevation gain, designed for experienced cyclists.

It is, therefore, a better choice for a full day out than for a quick trip.

Another way to discover Mallorca: Árta

Not all cycling in Mallorca has to be centred on the Tramuntana mountains. In the east of the island lies Artà, an interesting alternative for those who want a change of scenery and to discover a different area.

The roads around Artà allow you to plan routes with a different profile to those in the mountains, combining rural areas, small villages and secondary roads.

Furthermore, Artà is also included in long-distance cycling routes such as the Mallorca 312, which crosses various parts of the island. The 312-kilometre race starts in Playa de Muro and winds its way across Mallorca, passing through villages such as Artà, Andratx, Banyalbufar and Es Capdellà, as well as various mountain passes in the Serra de Tramuntana.

It is a good alternative for those who are already familiar with the most popular routes in the north and want to explore new routes.

Half a day or the full route?

One of the advantages of staying in the north of Mallorca is being able to tailor the ride to the weather and the ability of each cyclist.

For a morning out on your bike

Pollensa and Formentor are among the best options. The full route from Puerto Pollensa to Cap de Formentor and back is around 40 km and can be completed in about four hours, depending on your pace and any stops you make.

It’s a perfect outing for those who want to cycle in the morning and still have part of the day free.

For a day in the mountains

If you’re looking for more kilometres and elevation gain, you could opt for routes to Lluc, Sóller, Valldemossa or Fornalutx.

The route to Sa Calobra is around 95 km long, with significant elevation gain and several mountain passes. The route passes through Lluc and runs close to Puig Major before reaching Sa Calobra.

This route is designed for cyclists who are in good physical condition.

For those looking for a real challenge

The Serra de Tramuntana offers the opportunity to undertake much longer routes. Starting from Puerto Pollensa, there is even a route of approximately 168 km with 2,700 metres of climbing, taking in different parts of the mountain range.

And for those who want to tackle one of the island’s major cycling challenges, the Mallorca 312 covers 312 km and has a total elevation gain of around 5,050 metres.

Stops that are also part of the route

A good cycle route isn’t just about counting kilometres and elevation gain. Stops along the way are important too.

A coffee in Pollensa, a break in Formentor, a bite to eat in Sóller or a few minutes taking in the views in the Tramuntana mountains can make all the difference after several hours on the bike.

So, when planning your route, also think about where you want to stop, how long you want to cycle for and what sort of scenery you’d like to discover.

At Aparthotel Duva & Spa, the hotel team are used to welcoming cyclists and can offer information on alternative routes, road conditions, the weather and places to eat along the way.

Discover Mallorca on two wheels

Pollensa, Sóller, Valldemossa, Deià, Fornalutx and Artà prove that Mallorca’s prettiest villages can also make for excellent stops on a cycling route.

You can choose a short ride to Formentor, tackle the mountain passes of the Serra de Tramuntana, or plan a full day’s ride linking different villages and roads.

Because in Mallorca, the destination is only part of the experience. The real adventure begins when you get on your bike and start pedalling.

And if you’re looking for a base from which to explore the island, Puerto Pollensa puts some of Mallorca’s best-known cycle routes within easy reach.

Ready for your next ride?

Relax, get your bike ready and let Mallorca take care of the rest. At Aparthotel Duva & Spa, you’ll find accommodation specially designed for cyclists and a team ready to help you make the most of your rides around the island.
