7 health benefits of drinking red wine that will keep your glass half full

This is the season of wrapping up warm, brisk country walks and drinking wine. Mallorca is cold at this time of year. Cold and damp. Most of you will never see this side of the island, nor do I expect you would want to. An unusually crisp autumn may have given you a glimpse of what winter can look like on the island, and most cyclists will have experienced the odd cold and rainy day in early November or at the start of the training camps in March, but on the whole, these short winter months are the only time of year when Mallorca is empty and cold.

This is also when the island's vineyards get their much needed rainfall and locals enjoy the vintage of the year before.

As far as I am concerned, wine, especially red wine, makes me feel good, happy, relaxed and at peace with the world, and I have a particular fondness for the Mallorcan brews, so to me personally, Mallorca wine is good for me just because it makes me feel fine.

However, more scientific folk than me have broken down the benefits of red wine into 7 main points:

1. Resveratrol

Found mainly in red wine, but also in the skin of red grapes, peanuts, blueberries, raspberries, cranberries and dark chocolate, resveratrol is the main reason wine is said to be good for you; it is thought to act like antioxidants, protecting the body against damage to blood vessels, reducing cholesterol and preventing blood clots.

It may also be able to help diabetics regulate their blood sugar by helping to stimulate insulin secretion or activate a protein that regulates glucose and insulin sensitivity.

Research is as yet inconclusive however, and is based, as always, on healthy moderate drinking!

2. Boosts the Immune System

Polyphenols found in grape skin may play a protective role in heart disease and ethanol (alcohol) boosts the effectiveness of vaccinations and reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease.

3. Raises HDL (healthy) Cholesterol

Not all cholesterol is bad for you, in fact, there is good and bad cholesterol. Wine and alcohol in general, when taken in moderation, can raise HDL (healthy) cholesterol, keeping blood vessels flexible and helping prevent artery damage caused by high levels of LDL (harmful) cholesterol.

4. Increases Bone Density

As we get older our bones tend to become more brittle. Calcium in milk helps, but so does red wine! It would seem that red wine has high levels of silicon, which improves bone density, and like milk, if you have a glass before bed, you will probably sleep better too!

5. Reduces Blood Clotting

Wine reduces the formation of blood clots and the risk of unwanted clotting almost as effectively as aspirin.

6. Healthier Cells

Wine may improve the function of the layer of cells that line your blood vessels (endothelium).

7. Help You Stay Slim

Piceatannol is the protein that your body makes from Resveratrol and it deserves a mention here because tests have shown that it actually prevents the growth of fat cells by binding the insulin receptors and blocking the way for new fat cells to grow.

Mallorca is an excellent location for growing wine; fertile, temperate and with a keen following. In fact, it is the local population which consumes the greater part of Mallorca's wine production, followed closely by visiting tourists. As the island wine production is relatively small, it is hardly exported at all.

So, do try to taste some Mallorca wine while you are on holiday, it may be your only chance!

There are 3 main wine producing areas in Mallorca, all in the surprisingly unspoilt interior of the island; Binissalem, the foothills of the Tramuntana Mountains and Pla & Llevant, the fertile plains on the eastern side of Mallorca.

And there are 3 native grape varieties; Callet, Manto Negro and Moll (Prensal Blanc)

In the Pollensa area, where our Puerto Pollensa hotel is located, there are a number of wineries worth knowing about and if you would like to see how the wine is made and sample the different Mallorca wines in situ, we can arrange a wine tasting tour.

The Vinyes Mortitx project is a fairly recent creation that resulted from an idea thought up by a group of Mallorca wine enthusiasts. The initiative has also contributed towards energizing the area, promoting agriculture, economy and culture.

At its location, in the wild Tramuntana Mountains, the company has planted the very finest varieties of grapes, which enables it to produce truly singular wines, and they are delicious! It is a short drive from our Puerto Pollensa hotel, on the road to Lluc and there are organized tours of the vineyards and wineries.

You can also buy the Mortitx wines directly in the Mortitx winery shop and visits to the winery can be arranged by prior appointment at our Puerto Pollensa hotel.

C,an Vidalet is located on the old Pollensa to Alcudia road, where the first vines were planted in 1996. The winery produces fresh and fruity white wines with complex aromas: Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Moscatell grapes for the white wines and Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon for the reds.

Mallorca wine tours and wine tasting at the C,an Vidalet vineyards and winery can be arranged by prior appointment at our Puerto Pollensa hotel.

In the interest of the Mallorca wine industry and the general wellbeing of all our guests, we provide a full selection of fine Mallorca wine at our Puerto Pollensa hotel.

You can sample our finest Mallorca wine in the buffet restaurant or at the hotel bar, and if you would like to learn more about local brews or see the wine making process first hand, we can arrange wine tasting excursions and wine tours of local Mallorca wineries and wine tasting days at our Puerto Pollensa hotel.
