Retirement holidays in the sunshine
Is retirement is the best time of life to go on holiday, travel the world and fully enjoy yourself? This is when you get to fully enjoy each moment, and where better to do this than in the warm sunshine of a island retreat in the Mediterranean.
There are millions of places to go and visit, wonderful places to stay and fabulous hotels all over the world. Hard to know where to start. We propose you begin near home, with a short flight and a friendly hotel in Mallorca. Next year, or month, depending on how itchy footed you are, try somewhere new.
Puerto Pollensa or Port de Pollença
As holiday resorts go, Port de Pollensa, on the north coast of the Mediterranean Island of Mallorca is pretty ideal. The town is small and pretty, with white washed houses, cobbled streets, a central square and a seafront promenade, The Pine Walk, which meanders along the coast under a shaded canopy of ancient pine trees. Set against a backdrop of ragged mountains, the tail end of the northern Tramuntana, and lapped by the sea of the Bay of Pollensa, the location is magical and the climate is temperate all year round.

The Mediterranean Climate
Most travel brochures like to say the at Mallorca has 30 days of sunshine a year, some even go as far as claiming that its hot all year round. This is plainly untrue of course. Mallorca may be in the med, and its a good deal further south than Birmingham, but it's still Europe. What Mallorca does have is scorching hot summers and short winters, which can be sunny and bright, but are invariably damp.
The best time of year to visit the island is spring and autumn.
Spring is crisp and sunny, the days getting longer and the island ruffling itself out of its winter break, ready for the summer season to begin. Restaurants, cafes and shops open their doors for business and it is generally a vibrant a positive time of year.
Autumn is usually quite hot from September until the start of November, the sea temperatures stay warm and while locals are tired and services are beginning to slow down, the weather is blissful, hot by day and slowly getting cooler in the evenings.
Long haul flights - Who needs them?
Are you looking for a holiday away but don't want to fly long distances? You don't have to travel far to enjoy a vacation in the sunshine. And if long haul flights don't appeal all that much, try Mallorca, for a quick flight and relaxed holiday in the med.
It takes 2,5 hours to fly to the island. The whole trip always takes much longer of course... getting to the airport early, hanging around, finding transport on the other side etc., but the one part that makes this a lot more bearable, is that once you land in Palma de Mallorca, we can have a car, taxi or airport transfer waiting for you and whip you over to Duva in no time at all.
Why an all-inclusive hotel make sense...

Activities in Port de Pollensa
Given the location, amenities and services laid on by the all-inclusive hotel, you may be tempted to stay within the resort all day. After all, who says lazy breakfasts on the terrace, swimming in the pool, reading, sunbathing, naps, dining outdoors and coctails in the evening isn't the most healthy and wonderful way to spend the holidays?
If action calls however, there are a number of things to do in town, so take your pick from traditional, cultural, culinary or sport activities, all available on your doorstep in the little holiday resort of Port de Pollensa.
Boat Rides around the Bay of Pollensa
If you feel like spending a day on the water but don't like the sandy beaches all that much, you may want to take a charter around the Bay of Pollensa. One of the more pleasurable options is a half-day (morning or afternoon) cruise out to Formentor Beach with a second stop for brunch or tea at Chicken Bay.
There are several charter boat companies in Port de Pollensa, but one worth a try is Xaurak, a Menorcan boat (llaut in Catalan) that is solid, slow and incredibly relaxing. There's lots of outdoor space for sunbathing and eating on deck, shaded dining area and cabin down below, if you want a nap. And the best part: You can sit in the sea breeze and sunshine, far away from the shore and totally, blissfully relax.
